Controversial Disney Channel Episodes

Over the years, the House of Mouse found itself in hot water with both parents of its young audience, as well as from fans themselves, due to either making "jokes" in poor taste or covering storylines that some found inappropriate for young viewers.

While trying to use eating disorders and dietary restrictions as cheap fodder for laughs is certainly unacceptable, it was somewhat surprising to see what Disney Channel has opted to edit out of reruns that have premiered on other networks (spoiler alert: it has to do with teen sex).

1 Hannah Montana — "Uptight (Oliver's Alright)"

WHEN: Season 3, Episode 24

WHAT HAPPENED: As Seventeen previously reported, the diabetes episode of Hannah Montana created quite an uproar with parents. The original title of the episode (that was released outside the U.S.) was "No Sugar, Sugar," and was centered around Oliver being diagnosed with diabetes.

How the episode originally went involved Hannah and Lilly doing everything in their power to stop Oliver from eating any sugar at all, but Oliver just couldn't help himself. FYI, sugar does NOT cause diabetes. Per the American Diabetes Association, "Type 1 diabetes is caused by genetics and unknown factors that trigger the onset of the disease. Type 2 diabetes is not caused by sugar, but by genetics and lifestyle factors."

Back in 2008, an article in Parade that reported the episode getting pulled pointed out how "diabetics can and do eat sugar (think about fresh fruits!). In fact, they often need sugar. Take the case of insulin reactions (hypoglycemia). When that happens, a diabetic needs sugar to prevent insulin shock. In worst case scenarios, simple sugar saves lives."

Parade also wrote that when parents in the Children With Diabetes group "saw an on-demand preview [of the episode and] objected to its content," Disney Channel pulled the episode from its lineup.

Also in 2008, Diabetes Forecast reported, "Disney is currently revising 'No Sugar, Sugar' in light of the complaints, in particular re-assessing scenes like the birthday party, which may or may not remain." (FYI, parts of the birthday party were ultimately edited out for the U.S. release of the episode.)

At the end of the episode, actors Mitchel Musso (Oliver), Miley Cyrus (Hannah), and Emily Osment (Lilly) all broke the the fourth wall and spoke directly into the camera, sharing facts about diabetes.

2 Shake It Up — "Party It Up"

WHEN: Season 1, Episode 7

WHAT HAPPENED: Eating disorders are no joke, which is why this early episode of Shake It Up garnered so much negative attention. On the original cut of the episode, a model said the line, "I could just eat you up, well if I ate," then laughs.

Needless to say, audiences weren't laughing, especially former Disney Channel star Demi Lovato, who sought treatment for eating disorders and cutting in October 2010.

In 2011, Demi went off on Disney Channel on Twitter, slamming the network by saying things like, "I find it really funny how a company can lose one of their actress' [sic] from the pressures of an EATING DISORDER and yet still make joke ..."

According to HuffPost , the network listened to Demi and someone from the Disney Channel PR Twitter account tweeted two messages: "@ddlovato - we hear you & are pulling both episodes as quickly as possible & reevaluating them" and "@ddlovato - It's NEVER our intention to make light of eating disorders."

If you watch the episode on Amazon Prime Video, the line has been edited out.

3 So Random! — "Colbie Caillat"

WHEN: Season 1, Episode 9

WHAT HAPPENED: The Sonny with a Chance spin-off also had an eating disorder "joke" on a the episode with Colbie Caillat as a guest star. Disney Channel pulled it at the same time the network pulled the Shake It Up episode.

According to HuffPost , Demi Lovato retweeted a fan's tweet that pointed out how the episode was making light of eating disorders. The episode mentioned how a character only "ate one full meal a week" because his "agent's always on [him] about looking [his] best" and how if he "eats too many carbs, [he] won't get the jobs."

4 Boy Meets World — "If You Can't Be with the One You Love..."

WHEN: Season 5, Episode 18

WHAT HAPPENED: Unlike its spin-off, Girl Meets World, Boy Meets World originally premiered on ABC instead of Disney Channel, meaning it was able to get away with covering more "adult" themes. But when it came time for Disney Channel to air reruns, the network refused to show three episodes.

The first of them was the one where Cory and Shawn drank alcohol and eventually got busted by the cops. Throughout the episode, Shawn kept drinking, eventually getting into a fight with Jack.

The episode (as well as the series) is available to stream on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video.

5 The Suite Life of Zack & Cody — "Smart and Smarterer"

WHEN: Season 1, Episode 18

WHAT HAPPENED: Remember the episode where Zack pretends to be dyslexic so he can have extra time on his tests? Audiences nearly didn't get to see it, according to Adrian R'Mante, who played Esteban Julio Ricardo Montoya de la Rosa Ramírez.

He previously told Seventeen, "It's an episode that audience[s] 'almost' never got to see because of the content. They felt it made fun of kids with dyslexia and it honestly only aired maybe twice ... It's never aired on Disney Channel since."

6 Jessie — "Quitting Cold Koala"

WHEN: Season 2, Episode 20

WHAT HAPPENED: On the original cut of the episode, Stuart was made fun of by Jessie, Bertram, and the kids for not being able to eat gluten. During one scene, Zuri threw a pancake at Stuart, prompting the character to freak out and yell in horror, "Gluten." Ravi then said, "Whoa, he makes me look macho."

Needless to say, parents weren't pleased, especially those with children who have food allergies. One parent named Amy Raslevich, whose children both have Celiac disease, was livid, and her kids were upset. She told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, "There were tears in my daughter's eyes, and my son's fist was clenched."

Raslevich made a Change.org petition, urging "Disney Channel to stop airing the episode 'Quitting Cold Koala' on the Jessie show, and to stop using gluten-intolerance as an excuse to bully children with any disease, disorder or disability." In the petition, she went into detail about how her two children have suffered from their food allergies, explaining, "They are ostracized for a condition for which they did not ask."

Not long after, Disney Channel made a statement on the network's Facebook page: "To our viewers, we received your feedback about tonight's Jessie episode which some of you accessed early on Video-on-Demand. We are removing this particular episode from our regular programming schedule and will re-evaluate its references to gluten restrictions in the character's diet. Please accept our apologies for the upset this episode caused you and your family. We value your feedback and thank you for watching Disney Channel."

If you watch the episode on Amazon Prime Video, the gluten storyline has been edited out, but you can check out the original scenes here.

The episode (as well as the series) is available to stream on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video.

8 Boy Meets World — "The Truth About Honesty"

WHEN: Season 6, Episode 20

WHAT HAPPENED: The third and last episode Disney Channel refused to air was banned because it also included discussion of virginity and casual sex.

On the episode, the friends played an honesty game where they were asked questions and had to answer truthfully (basically, it was Truth or Dare, without the dare). When Shawn was asked what girl he'd like to spend the night with, no strings attached, he said Angela. The two then disappeared into a bedroom. Later, they ended up not having sex, and Shawn mentioned he couldn't sleep with someone he wasn't emotionally connected to, aka he didn't want to go the 'friends with benefits' route.

Meanwhile, when Cory was asked what he'd change about Topanga, she thought he'd make a joke about his virginity. Instead, he said he'd like to change her need to be perfect all the time. After a fight, the couple comprised on the virginity thing by Topanga showing Cory her butt. "I have seen the Promised Land!"
